Mary is a public health nurse who lives in western Illinois. Two years ago, her grandchildren, Hillary and Ben, were both diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

“At the time, I told my daughter that, if we could get the right services, we could deal with this situation together.” But when Mary and her daughter began calling local agencies, they found virtually no help.

Fortunately, their diagnosing physician in St. Louis told Mary and her daughter about The Autism Program of Illinois. “ Our doctor said that he wished the State of Missouri had a program like TAP,” Mary said. “TAP provides the services and resources we need to help Hillary and Ben succeed. They are both doing well.” But TAP offers more than just services, it provides valuable information and expert advice that help families understand autism and how to deal with its many challenges.

“As a public health nurse, I come into contact with many parents,” says Mary. “Some of those parents believe their children may have autism, but don’t know where to turn for help. I have been referring many of them to TAP, and giving them information and materials I have received. Thanks to the Autism Program of Illinois, I am doing the best I can for my grandkids, while also helping other children and their families in the community.”
